collared dove where are they going?
after yesterdays goshawk,the good run continued with this collared dove(not many at 1250ft), only my second record up here at the 'with'.the first record was also last april. it was very shy and skittish,so a migrant.but from where? collared dove movement is a bit unusual i think. i will have to do a bit of research!!!!

Check out African Collared Dove - those markings are very strong as is the extensive neck ring. Dove fanciers keep them so it probably is feral.
I've seen many collared doves on the coast over the years, in places they do not normally occur, flying with a purpose, or, like last autumn, beahiving like a knackered migrant and pitching into unusual habo...
I can agree with Ipin. In Northumberland we sometimes see a 'passage' of sorts with birds well out of habitat heading along to coast, usually in the spring.

Always a good feeling to get a rare patch bird Darrell. Even a Collared Dove.
